You can claim through a utility patent: A machine of sort, an article of manufacture, a composition of matter, a business process or method, the steps of that method.
Utility patents lasts twenty years from the date on which the application is filed. Utility patents issued prior to June 8, 1995, have a term of seventeen years from the date the patent issued.
